Privacy policy
Last updated: 1 August 2026
This Privacy policy explains how Genius Maker Themes (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, stores, and shares personal information when you visit geniusmakerthemes.com, purchase our themes, use your customer account, connect a license to a Shopify store, or use our theme software.
By using our website, purchasing our products, or using our licensing services, you agree to this Privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.
This policy is written in plain language. It is not legal advice. We recommend having a lawyer review it for your business and the countries where you sell.
1. Who we are
Data controller / data fiduciary:
Genius Maker Themes
Email: geniusmakerthemes@gmail.com
Website: https://geniusmakerthemes.com
For privacy questions, data requests, or complaints, contact us at the email above.
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- Our Shopify storefront at geniusmakerthemes.com;
- Order processing, digital downloads, and customer account features provided through Shopify;
- Live chat and messaging through Shopify Inbox on our store (including automated AI-assisted replies where enabled);
- Our “My Licenses” customer account experience (Profile → My Licenses);
- Our license validation service used when you activate a theme in the Shopify theme editor;
- Support communications you send to us by email.
This policy does not control how Shopify, payment providers, or your own Shopify store handle data. Those services have their own privacy policies. When you use Shopify Inbox, Shopify also processes certain customer data on our behalf as described in Section 7.
3. Information we collect
We collect only what we need to sell themes, deliver downloads, issue and enforce licenses, provide support, and comply with law.
A. Information you provide directly
- Name, email address, billing address, and order details when you checkout (processed primarily through Shopify);
- Messages you send through Shopify Inbox live chat on our store (including message content and, where sign-in is required, your customer account details);
- Messages you send to geniusmakerthemes@gmail.com (for example order number, store domain, activation questions);
- Store domain you enter when connecting a license in My Licenses (must be a valid *.myshopify.com permanent domain);
- License key you paste into Theme settings (stored in your Shopify theme settings on your store; we receive it only when the theme validates the license).
B. Information collected automatically
Through Shopify and standard website operation, we may receive or Shopify may collect on our behalf:
- Device and browser type;
- IP address and general location (country/region level);
- Pages viewed, referral source, and session activity on our store;
- Cookies and similar technologies used for checkout, cart, analytics, security, and chat (see Section 9).
When you use My Licenses in your Shopify customer account, our licensing API receives a short-lived Shopify session token so we can confirm you are the logged-in customer. We verify that token and use the customer identifier inside it to show your license keys. We do not ask you to create a separate Genius Maker account.
When you use an activated theme in the Shopify theme editor, the theme may send a validation request containing:
- Your license key (from Theme settings);
- Your store’s permanent myshopify.com domain;
- The theme identifier (for example “bolt”).
The theme may also store a temporary validation result in your browser’s local storage to reduce repeated checks. That cache stays on your device.
C. Information we store in our license database
To operate licensing, we store license records in a secure database hosted by Supabase. For each license, this may include:
- License key;
- Theme name / theme identifier;
- Plan type (Solo, Freelancer, Agency);
- License status (active or revoked);
- Shopify order ID and order name;
- Shopify customer ID;
- Customer email (from the order);
- Connected store permanent domain (when you connect a store in My Licenses);
- Created and updated timestamps.
We do not intentionally collect sensitive categories of data (such as health, biometric, or government ID data) through our theme licensing system.
D. Shopify Inbox (live chat)
When you use the chat widget on our store, Shopify Inbox collects and processes information needed to operate chat, which may include:
- Your chat messages and any files or links you send;
- Your name and email address (especially if customer sign-in is required before chat);
- Conversation metadata (date, time, status, assigned staff);
- Basic device, browser, and session information related to the chat session;
- Pages you viewed on our store in connection with the chat, where available in Shopify Inbox.
We access this information in our Shopify admin to read and reply to conversations. Shopify stores and processes chat data on our behalf under Shopify’s terms and Data Processing Addendum.
4. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- Process orders and deliver digital theme downloads;
- Generate, display, and manage license keys tied to your purchase;
- Let you connect a license to one store domain per key (as allowed by your plan);
- Validate licenses when you use the theme in the Shopify editor;
- Revoke licenses when required (for example after a refund, chargeback, fraud, or terms breach);
- Respond to support requests (including email and Shopify Inbox chat);
- Operate live chat, instant answers, and (where enabled) automated AI-assisted replies in Shopify Inbox;
- Improve our products, documentation, and activation experience;
- Protect our business, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms of service;
- Comply with legal, tax, and accounting obligations.
We do not use your data to guarantee sales or business results. We do not sell your personal information.
5. Legal bases for processing (where applicable)
Depending on your location, we rely on one or more of the following:
- Performance of a contract — to fulfil your purchase, deliver downloads, and operate your license;
- Legitimate interests — to secure our licensing system, prevent fraud, and improve our services in a way that respects your rights;
- Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose information under applicable law;
- Consent — where required for optional marketing cookies or communications (you may withdraw consent where applicable).
If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or other regions with similar laws, you may have additional rights described in Section 11.
6. How we share information
We share personal information only as needed to run our business:
A. Shopify
We use Shopify to host our store, process orders, provide customer accounts, deliver digital downloads, and operate Shopify Inbox live chat. Shopify processes customer, order, and chat data on our behalf as a service provider / data processor under Shopify’s Data Processing Addendum.
For more information about how Shopify processes personal data when you interact with our store or chat, see:
- Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy: https://www.shopify.com/legal/privacy
- Shopify Inbox Terms of Service: https://www.shopify.com/legal/inbox-terms
If you have a privacy request related to data Shopify processes for our store, you may contact us at geniusmakerthemes@gmail.com. We may need to coordinate with Shopify to fulfil certain requests.
B. Supabase
We use Supabase to host our license database and serverless functions (including license validation and My Licenses API). Supabase processes and stores license-related data on our behalf as a service provider / data processor.
C. Payment processors
Payments are handled by Shopify Payments and/or other payment providers you select at checkout. We do not store full payment card numbers on our own servers.
D. Email
If you email us, your message and contact details are handled through our email provider (for example Gmail) to respond to you.
E. Legal and safety
We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that disclosure is required to comply with law, respond to lawful requests, protect our rights, investigate fraud or security issues, or enforce our policies.
We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties for their marketing.
7. Shopify Inbox and AI-assisted chat
We use Shopify Inbox so you can message us from our storefront. Customer sign-in may be required before you can start a chat.
Role of Shopify
Shopify provides the Inbox platform and processes chat-related personal data on our behalf. Genius Maker Themes decides why chat data is used (for example customer support and order help) and Shopify handles storage, delivery, and technical processing of messages according to its agreements with us.
Automated and AI-assisted replies
We may enable Shopify’s automated or AI-assisted features (for example an AI agent, suggested replies, or instant answers) to respond to common questions faster. Important:
- Automated and AI-generated replies may not always be accurate, complete, or up to date;
- They are for general store and product support only, not legal, tax, or financial advice;
- A human team member may review, override, or continue the conversation;
- Do not share passwords, full payment card numbers, or other highly sensitive information in chat.
Your choices
You can choose not to use live chat and contact us instead at geniusmakerthemes@gmail.com. If you use chat, avoid sharing information you do not want stored in our support records.
8. International data transfers
We are based in India. Our service providers (including Shopify and Supabase) may process data in India, the United States, the European Union, or other countries where they operate data centres.
When data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards where required by law (such as contractual protections offered by our service providers). By using our services, you understand that your information may be processed outside your home country.
9. Cookies and similar technologies
On our storefront, cookies and similar technologies may be used for:
- Essential functions (cart, checkout, login, security);
- Shopify Inbox chat widget and session features;
- Analytics and performance measurement (if enabled in Shopify or connected apps);
- Marketing or advertising (only if you use such Shopify apps or integrations).
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies may affect checkout or account features.
When you use the theme editor, local storage on your device may cache license validation status for up to 24 hours to improve performance. You can clear site data in your browser to remove this cache.
10. Data retention
We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, unless a longer period is required by law.
Typical retention:
- Order and customer records — retained as long as needed for sales records, tax, support, and legal compliance (often several years, per applicable law);
- License records — retained while your license is active and for a reasonable period after revocation or account closure to prevent abuse, resolve disputes, and enforce our Terms;
- Support emails — retained as long as needed to resolve your request and maintain a reasonable support history;
- Shopify Inbox chat conversations — retained in our Shopify admin according to Shopify’s retention tools and our support needs, then deleted or archived when no longer required;
- Server logs — retained for a limited period for security and troubleshooting, then deleted or aggregated.
When data is no longer needed, we delete it or anonymize it where feasible.
11. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights such as:
- Access — request a copy of personal information we hold about you;
- Correction — request correction of inaccurate information;
- Deletion — request deletion of certain information;
- Restriction or objection — object to or restrict certain processing;
- Portability — receive certain data in a portable format where applicable;
- Withdraw consent — where processing is based on consent.
Important limits:
- We may need to keep license and order records to enforce licenses, prevent fraud, handle disputes, and meet legal obligations even if you request deletion;
- Revoking a license or deleting portal data does not automatically entitle you to a refund (see our Refund policy);
- To exercise rights, email geniusmakerthemes@gmail.com with your request and enough information to verify your identity (for example your order email and order number). We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
If you are in India, you may also have rights under applicable data protection law, including raising a grievance with us at the contact above.
If you are in the EEA or UK and believe we have not addressed your concern, you may have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
12. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information, including:
- Restricted database access (license data is not publicly readable);
- Server-side validation of Shopify customer session tokens for My Licenses;
- HTTPS for data in transit;
- License revocation on refund, chargeback, or breach where applicable.
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. You are responsible for keeping your license keys confidential and securing access to your Shopify admin and customer account.
13. Children
Our products and services are intended for businesses and adults purchasing software for commercial or professional use. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16 (or the age defined by local law). If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
14. Third-party links
Our website or communications may link to third-party sites (for example Shopify, documentation, or support resources). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. Review their policies before providing personal information.
15. Changes to this Privacy policy
We may update this Privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. If changes are material, we may post a notice on our store or notify customers by email where appropriate. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated policy.
